A downloadable mod

A patch for Pokemon Crystal 1.1. This is my vision/version of the game. While there are some really awesome romhacks out there (check Crystal Legacy), there was always something that i didn't quite like, so i made my own.

This version features shiny pokemon with an increased rate (1/256) and guarantees they are good (DVs 12+). You will also be able to make one of your Pokemon into a shiny early on with the new Shiny Gem item. Power up your darlings with a version of Mystery Dungeons Rainbow Gummies, which increase a Pokemons DVs by 1 across all stats.

I never played heart gold or soul silver, so i didn't add any content from those games. I only made changes that are in line with my percieved oldschool vision of the game, so no fancy upgraded individual party screen icons or pokemon from newer generations. As i grew older the mainline games were never a challange, thats why the gym leaders have seen some change and wild spawns have a more smooth leveling curve. You at least have to apply a bit of effort now. I slightly adjusted wild spawns in a way that allows to have a diverse team early on without changing much of the overall spawn pool. I added features like the Move Reminder, Rainbowgummies or the Gene Scientist to reduce "regret" situations and allow for a more casual perfectionism without removing the sense that you "earned" something -- if that makes sense to you.

How to use

  1. have a pokemon crystal rom version 1.1 (easy find online. English language only)
  2. download this patch
  3. apply patch to rom
  4. play rom on any emulator (i use Visual Boy Advance on pc or Pizza Boy pro on android)

  • Added Rainbow Gummies, an item that raises a Pokemons DVs by 1 across all stats (up to the max of 15). Raising all DVs to 12 or higher makes a Pokemon shiny. You can get them from the Goldenrod Bargain Shop, Buena or wild Mr.Mimes.
  • Added a password System to Change the available starters for the Player.
    • When you start a new game, you will be asked to input an optional password. This determines what starters are available for you to choose (due to limitations in the engine, your rival will still have a Johto starter). Use the following passwords:

More invasive changes (hate it or love it)

  • Physical/special split
  • All Gym leaders and Elite 4 have adjusted teams and level (mostly in line with the changes seen in Crystal Legacy Rom. Makes the game a bit more challenging)
  • Rebalanced some Moves and Pokemon Movesets. Reworked some of the truely useless moves (looking at you Whirlpool) and increased overall TM/HM compatability. See documentation for more information.
  • Adjusted the level of wild mons and trainers throughout the whole game (yes this includes Kanto). This creates a more smooth level curve up to the endgame. Wild spawns now actually vary in their level. Mt Silver will now have mons in range of 60-70.
  • A special Pokemon can be encountered at Cinnabar Island (without talking to anyone in Viridian city... Catching it does not corrupt your savegame but also does not duplicate items :P)
  • Pokemon with DVs of 12 or above in every stat are guarateed shiny. This results in a raised chance of approx 1/256 Pokemon beeing shiny. Plus they will be good.
  • TMs are still consumable, but can now be bought from various shops, Game Corners or shady Rocket Grunts around the world (Olivine, Blackthorn, Route10 PokeCenter, Safari).
  • Every TM can be re-aquired
  • Changes to NPC Traders and added some new ones.
  • Changes Buenas prizes to include more valuable or exotic Items.
  • Type Boost Items (like Magnet or Pink Bow) now boost 20% like later gens.
  • Rocket Grunts have Pokemon that are more in line with their theme
  • The Move Relearner and Memory Gem are able to teach an evolved Pokemon its  Moves as if it were at basic evolution stage (i.e. Typhlosion can learn Flamethrower at the same level as Cyndaquil would learn it)
  • Added the Gene Scientist at Pewter Lab. for the price of one Gold Leaf he can teach a Move that otherwise could only be aquired by breeding.
    • Gold Leafs are sometimes held by certain wild Pokemon (10% chance; Sunkern, Oddish, Stantler, Heracross and some more)
  • Pokemon can now use held X-Items. They trigger at the very beginnig of battle. When switching in a mon with an held X-Item it triggers before its first move. This is a pretty drastic but interesting change, i'm curious how this is percieved.
  • You can buy inverted Rare Candy at the Battle Tower to de-level a mon.
  • Reduced the longer end of hatching times by 1-2 magnitudes (Chansey, Lapras, Kabuto, etc.. Legendary Pokemon take the longest with 10k-12k steps)

Added breeding for legendary Pokemon.
These are the egg groups:

  • Mew: fairy, human
  • Mewtwo: human
  • Celebi: fairy
  • 5 Birds: flight
  • 3 Beasts: ground/field

Issues

  • Sometimes the Lt. Surge trash puzzle is wonky, especially the bins on the outer rows.
  • The twins below Ecruteak take on the player sprite (not my fault, was already like that i swear xD).

Planned

  • Balancing & Bugfixes according to playtesting
  • Better documentation
  • Change the title screen
  • More passwords (need to circumvent the space limitation first)

Thanks to Rangi42 and their dissassembly team for very helpful tutorials and to TheSmithPlays for all the thoughts and work they put into  Gym leaders, Elite 4 and Move rebalancing (which i used as a baseline for this rom).
